MDP’s presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed’s (Anni) decision to hold mid-term elections if elected as president is a very responsible decision, the MDP Alliance has said.Speaking at a news briefing held in Seenu atoll Hithadhoo on Monday night, Dr. Musthafa Luthufee said that Anni had made the decision to hold mid-term elections in order to bring about the kind of leadership that the people of the country wanted.“He isn’t all that worried about losing his leadership position,” the Vice President of National Unity Party said. “So holding free and fair elections during the middle of his presidential term would be of great benefit to the people. We don’t consider his decision to be unconstitutional. He should be given the chance to do so.”He also said that none of the other parties that had joined the MDP Alliance would put pressure to hold elections and that all Anni wanted was to establish a fair government. Even if the people elected a president for a five-year term it would pose no problems to the Government or towards achieving the goals outlined in the manifesto if they were to hold mid-term elections, Luthufee said.
